If you are a woman and experiencing problems with your reproductive system, your GP may refer you to a gynaecologist. A gynaecologist is a medical professional who specialises in diagnosing and treating conditions relating to the vulva, vagina, uterus (womb) and ovaries.

Common reasons for referral to a gynaecologist include menstrual problems, such as heavy or irregular periods,  painful periods,  pelvic pain,  vaginal infections,  urinary incontinence, and  fertility issues.

Gynaecologists can also provide preventive care, such as cervical smears, and can diagnose and treat gynaecological cancers

It is important to take care of your reproductive health and seek medical attention if you are experiencing any problems. With the right care and support from one of our many gynaecologists, it is possible to manage and treat many gynaecological conditions and maintain good reproductive health.

Why I might be referred

Disorders affecting women’s reproductive systems can lead to a variety of symptoms. These include pain, inflammation, and discomfort. These symptoms may mean that you find it difficult to do everyday activities like physical exercise, work or household chores. Your GP or consultant may refer you to a Blackrock Health Gynaecology department if you have tried other forms of treatment and are not seeing results.

Our gynaecology team

Our gynaecology team specialises in both benign and malignant conditions, including gynaecological cancer, with a focus on surgery for advanced stages.

We can also provide services to preserve fertility in young cancer patients and for advanced endometriosis.

We investigate and treat urinary incontinence and pelvic floor health.

Our team is at the forefront of urogynaecology research internationally. We assess and treat those with urogynaecological complaints, providing access to the most modern and effective treatments and surgical techniques.

What to expect
