New Neurophysiology Facility Opens at Hermitage Medical Clinic
Due to expansion of clinical activities at the Hermitage Medical Clinic, a new neurophysiology facility has opened at the Hermitage Medical Clinic which provides direct access for GPs and consultants.
The Director of the Neurophysiology Service is Dr Ronan Walsh, Consultant Neurologist and Neurophysiologist.
Dr Walsh trained in Neurology and Neurophysiology in Ireland and the US. He undertook
residency and fellowship in Boston in the Harvard Partners programme and then went
on staff at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital, a Harvard Medical school teaching
hospital. Dr Walsh has already been providing an EMG and nerve conduction study
service in the Hermitage and this is now being expanded to provide a full neurophysiology
service. This specialist service is delivered by Margaret Sullivan a Clinical Scientist with more than 15 years’ experience in both paediatrics and adult neurophysiology measurement
The Neurophysiology Department provides diagnostic testing for seizures,
encephalopathy/confusionn, non-epileptic seizures, carpal tunnel syndrome, poly-neuropathy,
compression neuropathies, radiculopathy, myopathy, neuromuscular junction disorders, autonomic disorders, multiple sclerosis (evoked potentials) and trigeminal disorders.
Specific tests offered in the Department include routine EEG’s, sleep-deprived EEG’s,
telemetry studies, testing for carpal tunnel syndrome, upper and lower limb nerve
conduction studies (NCS), EMG clinics, repetitive stimulation (testing for neuromuscular junction disorders), and blink responses (assessment of trigeminal nerves). The Department aims to further develop this service in the near future to include autonomic system testing,
visual evoked responses (test for optic neuritis and multiple sclerosis), somatasensory
evoked responses (spinal cord disorders and multiple sclerosis), quantitative sensory testing,
and intra-operative monitoring.
Dr Walsh commented:
“I am really excited about expanding our neurophysiology services to include routine, sleep-deprived and telemetry EEG studies. This will allow us to fully assess seizure/epilepsy patients and in conjunction with our recent launch of the Cyber Knife for radio-neurosurgery, further strengthens the Hermitage Clinic as a centre of excellence for neurosciences”.
