Training and Experience:
I am an honours graduate of UCD (1998) and subsequently completed 12 years of surgical training in Ireland specialising in Colorectal Surgery. My higher surgical training included a 1-year colorectal fellowship at the Mayo Clinic, USA focusing on complex surgery for colon & rectal cancer and IBD. I completed a further 1-year fellowship in laparoscopic colorectal surgery at St Mary’s Hospital, London. I was appointed as a consultant in 2010 and am experienced in open and laparoscopic colorectal and general surgery, endoscopy and surgical emergencies and have a particular interest in colorectal cancer and IBD. I am involved in the surgical treatment of patients with screen detected (early) bowel cancer and also rectal cancer.

Research and Teaching:
I have published multiple peer-reviewed papers and book chapters in colorectal and general surgery and have a particular research interest in Crohn’s disease and rectal cancer. A Doctorate of Medicine was awarded in 2003 for research examining surgical treatment of Crohn’s disease. My research has received multiple awards including the Presidents Prize RCSI (2003) and a RAMI Medal (2002). I received many prestigious bursaries to support research and training collaborations including the RCSI Surgical Travelling Fellowship 2009. Appointed as Honorary Senior Lecturer in RCSI and I am involved in both undergraduate and postgraduate surgical education and examining.
