Prof. Caulfield graduated from University College Dublin medical school and following completion of his Basic Surgical Training Scheme, subsequently moved to the UK to continue his higher plastic surgery training.

In the UK he completed 2 years full time research into wound healing and burns as part of his MD as The Duke of Kent Research Fellow, based at The John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford and Stoke Mandeville Hospital in Aylesbury. This is a highly prestigious research post in plastic surgery under the patronage of The Duke of Kent and The Royal Family.

Prof Caulfield then successfully gained a highly sought after training post on the Pan Thames (London) Specialist Registrar Training Scheme in Plastic Surgery, during which he spent 3 years working at the world famous St Andrew’s Unit in Chelmsford, spending 2 years working specifically in the areas of breast reconstruction and aesthetic / congenital breast surgery, under the guidance of Mr Venkat Ramakrishnan, a world renowned breast reconstruction specialist.  Throughout this time he also gained extensive experience in management of complex skin cancers and their treatment.

He then spent 18 months in the internationally famous plastic surgery unit at East Grinstead, again mainly working in the area of breast reconstruction and aesthetic breast surgery.

A further 2 years were spent completing specialist higher level training fellowships, including a 12 month Oncoplastic Breast Reconstruction / Aesthetic Breast Fellowship at The Christie Cancer Hospital in Manchester.

Following this he successfully completed a JCST Interface Cosmetic Surgery Fellowship in several world famous private hospitals all across London and a subsequent microsurgery reconstructive fellowship at Charing Cross Hospital in London.

He gained his CCT (certificate of completion of training)  in Plastic Surgery on the London training scheme in 2010 and spent 3 years working as Consultant Plastic Surgeon in the UK, initially in Devon and then in Sheffield, before returning to take up a post as Consultant Plastic Surgeon at The Mater Misericordiae University Hospital specialising in breast reconstruction and aesthetic breast surgery, as well as all aspects of general plastic surgery.
